One Story in Two Voices Chapter 11: On the Move Pt. 1

As a married couple, with Dick serving in the military and no permanent vocation, we moved around on a somewhat regular basis. On the upside, we don’t have a lot to pack or transport. We started at:

206 Franklin Street, Elmira, NY 14904, a multiple occupancy home that contains 2,769 sq ft built in 1900. It contains 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. (5 1/2 months), I’m with child, then…

500 Beecher Street, Elmira, NY 14904, a single family home that contains 1,797 sq ft built in 1897. It contains 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. We would stay here with my parents during the later stages of my pregnancy. (7 months), then (when Keith was 1-month-old, approx. June 3, 1949), off to…

217 Veterans Court, 3 room apartment, moved from here on May 31, 1951, then…

365 Warnick Street (Hawthorne Court), Elmira, NY 14901, moved into on May 31,1951 apartment, then…

101 Adelphi Street, Brooklyn, NY 11205, from January 5, 1952 to the end of February 1952, then…

500 Beecher Street, Elmira, NY 14904, with parents, until the end of September 1952, (Dick reenlisted December 17, 1952) then…

I shared a bunch about our time in Brooklyn, so if you need to review, do so. As you can see, we have been around, but one of my favorite homes, of course, was with grandma, the big house, huge backyard with a sandbox where I learn one should not throw sand in your cousin’s face! I’m sure it was for a good reason, but it clearly freaked out all the adults. Something about white sand having sharp edges. I recall grandma holding Paul’s hands, keeping him from rubbing his eyes, screaming. All turned out well, minus the corporal punishment, and we both learned an important lesson. First, don’t bug me while in the sandbox and second, don’t throw sand in your cousin’s face. We actually got along really well.

They say when separate we were great, well-behaved children, but together we always found a way to get into mischief (The stories I could tell). I believe it was his shortcoming, his questionable leadership, his creativity, his “we should try this,” and my willingness to give it a go.

Rockaway, Queens, NY, (Dick discharged November 1953), then back to parents until we find our own, hopefully, permanent place of residence.

500 Beecher Street, Elmira, NY 14904, with parents, then…
