Talking-heads and journalists fill print media and air waves with angst. Our children cannot do math.
Eighty percent of mathematical knowledge is gained by the end of sixth grade. Beyond middle-school near impossible to “catch-up.”
As a middle-school teacher, math mentor, K-12 Math Coordinator and consultant, can attest to that supposition. During parent-teacher conferences, heard repeatedly, “I was never good at math” or some such confession.
This is not helpful. Stop.
Repeat after me, “we are all mathematicians.”
Yes, we exist along a continuum. Our common goal, whether an infant, student, or professional, is to expand our mathematical understanding.
