February 5th, 2026!
For most, one day looks like any other. One day closer to an end. For me, a cousin’s birthday, a sister’s birthday, multiple visits to medical offices. Eat, drink, and take out the recyclables.
But the 5th? What is special about that day? Not my birthday and not Valentine’s Day.
History is relevant.
The last major nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia. The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) expires. So what? Possible ramifications.
Less transparency and trust
Risk of a new nuclear arms buildup
Weaker global arms control
Greater geopolitical tension
Nothing was stopping the Russians during the force of the treaty. Nothing stopping the Chinese. and the North Koreans before and still nothing now. Too many nuclear weapons and too many fingers on triggers. Something could go wrong, just too many of those damned things, and too many things that go wrong. You are correct. All it will take is one "ops!"
